The Spokane Indians hammered the Vancouver Canadians 9-1 at Nat Bailey Stadium on Wednesday.

Spokane scored early and often in the first inning against C’s starter Pat Gallagher. The second pitch of the game was lofted over the head of second baseman Jamari Baylor for a single to right field. Dyan Jorge bunted his way aboard for an infield single and a Gallagher throwing error allowed Carrigg to cross the plate with the game’s first run. Jorge stole third base and was joined on the base paths by Kyle Karros who had an infield knock to third and Jake Snider who was hit in the left elbow. Juan Guerrero cleared the bags with a double to score Jorge, Karros and Snider to put Spokane up 4-0. Bryant Betancourt struck out swinging but Guerrero stole third on the play before scoring on a base hit to center field by Robby Martin Jr.

Carrigg led off the second inning with an infield single to third and proceeded to pilfer second and third. Gallagher struck out Jorge for the first of two consecutive outs but he plunked Snider on the left foot. Guerrero burned the C’s again with a base hit to left that Glenn Santiago overran, allowing Carrigg and Snider to score Spokane’s sixth and seventh runs. That was it for Gallagher as Rafael Ohashi came into the game. He walked Jack Blomgren before striking out Betancourt.

The only time the Canadians crossed the plate was in the bottom of the third when Estiven Machado jumped on the first pitch from Spokane starter Mason Green over the wall in left-center.

Spokane got to Ohashi in the fourth with a two-out rally. Guerrero singled to left, confiscated second base and after a Blomgren free pass, scored on a Betancourt base hit to right.

The final run came in the fifth when Jesus Bugarin took Ohashi deep for a leadoff dinger to left.

C's Notes

Peyton Williams had the first Vancouver hit with a single to left with two outs in the first but Green proceeded to strike out the side over the first two innings, despite falling behind Jackson Hornung 3-0 in the count to start the second.

Green retired six in a row after Machado’s homer before Santiago singled to left to begin the fifth. Robert Brooks picked up his first hit as a Canadian with a single to right but that was it for that inning.

Nick Goodwin had a walk with two outs in the sixth and he was the last man to reach base against Green.

Brooks started the eighth inning with a leadoff walk and Baylor picked up a base on balls with one out against Ryan Rolison. Brayan Castillo was called in to get the final out of the eighth before retiring all three hitters he faced in the ninth.

Naswell Paulino was the first C’s hurler to turn in a scoreless line. After Ohashi gave up a single to center to Carrigg and a one-out double to right to Karros in the fifth, Paulino walked Snider to load the bases but he deflected a ground ball from Guerrero which led to a 1-6-3 double play.

The sixth inning saw Paulino induce another DP ball. Blomgren singled to left and Betancourt had a base hit up the middle but Martin hit into a 6-3 double play before Bugarin struck out.

In the seventh, Paulino had a clean inning which began with a strikeout of Carrigg and Johnathan Lavallee also turned in a 1-2-3 frame in the eighth.

Conor Larkin had some traffic on the bases in the ninth. A throwing error by Machado at short allowed Jesus Ordoñez—who replaced Betancourt behind the dish—to reach second base. Larkin struck out Martin and Bugarin before Carrigg singled to left to move Ordoñez to third. The runners were stranded when Jorge flew out to right.

In the transactions column, utility man Jeff Wehler has been placed on the seven-day injured list and catcher Kekai Rios has been promoted to Double-A New Hampshire.

Connor O’Halloran makes his second home start for the Canadians on Thursday in another 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Nat Bailey Stadium. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. on CanadiansBaseball.com and MiLB.TV with Tyler Zickel and Chris Georges describing the action.
