The Vancouver Canadians knocked off the Hillsboro Hops 5-1 at Hillsboro Ballpark on Sunday.

There were goose eggs on the linescore for the first six innings before the Canadians scored the first runs of the game in the top of the seventh. Jackson Hornung singled to right and Jamari Baylor walked with one out. Jeff Wehler then doubled to right to drive in Hornung with the first run of the game. That led to Hillsboro starter Logan Clayton leaving the game. Carlos Meza was summoned from the bullpen to replace his fellow left-hander and walked Glenn Santiago to put runners at the corners. Dylan Rock hit a grounder to Hops third baseman José Fernandez who threw out Baylor at home. Hops catcher Christian Cerda tried to throw out Rock at first but instead hit Rock in the back of the neck. Wehler wound up coming home on the play to make it 2-0 Vancouver. Rock remained in the game but was caught in a rundown by Meza. Santiago tried to score from third but was tagged out on a 1-3-5-2-6 play for the third out.
The Hops would also get on the board in their half of the seventh inning. Cerda singled to center with one out and Kevin Sim drew a walk against C’s reliever Carson Pierce. Fernandez then greeted Grayson Thurman with a base hit to left and Jean Walters drew a bases-loaded walk to score Cerda. Thurman limited the damage by getting Jack Hurley to foul out to third and Andrew Pintar to hit into a 6-4 fielder’s choice.
The C’s got some breathing room in the ninth against Hops reliever Zane Russell. Hornung started the rally again with an infield single to short. Pinch-runner Dasan Brown went to second base on a Baylor walk and tagged up to go to third on a Wehler fly out to right. Brown was thrown out at home on a Santiago 3-2 fielder’s choice. Russell then issued walks to Rock and Estiven Machado with the latter free pass scoring Baylor to up the Vancouver lead to 3-1. Vancouver, B.C. native Eli Saul was brought onto the mound and surrendered a two-out double to right to Ryan McCarty that scored Santiago and Rock.
C-Notes

Lazaro Estrada enjoyed his best outing of the season with five shutout frames with just four baserunners to deal with. He stranded a Gavin Conticello two-out single to center and stolen base in the first inning and a Sim two-out knock up the middle in the second thanks to a pair of strikeouts. Manny Peña struck out swinging to begin the inning and Fernández struck out on a foul tip to end it.
In the bottom of the fourth, Estrada walked Conticello before inducing Neyfy Castillo to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Peña followed with a single to left and went to second on a wild pitch but that was as far as he got. Estrada ended his day with a 1-2-3 fifth, striking out Walters to wrap up the inning.
Carson Pierce wound up with the win after taking over for Estrada to begin the sixth. He struck out Hurley to start things off and worked around a two-out Castillo in a scoreless frame.
Justin Kelly worked a perfect eighth that featured a strikeout of Castillo. Alex Amalfi finished up with a scoreless ninth, getting away with a one-out single to right and a Walters two-out base hit to center with a game-ending strikeout of Hurley.
Wehler had the first Vancouver hit with a two-out single to right field with two away in the second inning. One-out singles in the fourth and fifth by Nick Goodwin and Santiago respectively and a McCarty one-out walk in the sixth were all the C’s could manage after two inning-ending double plays in innings five and six.
Hillsboro reliever Armando Vasquez walked McCarty and Jace Bohrofen with one out in the eighth but that inning was ended by another double play.
Hornung was robbed of at least a double if not a home run when Conticello made a leaping grab against the right field fence after Goodwin’s fourth inning single.
The Canadians return home to host the Tri-City Dust Devils in a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Who will throw that pitch has not been determined. The game is on CanadiansBaseball.com and MiLB.TV. with Tyler Zickel and Chris Georges on the call.
Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez will be on hand to sign autographs for the fans.
