The Vancouver Canadians were dumped by the Everett AquaSox 6-2 at Funko Field on Tuesday.

The Canadians took advantage of the cozy confines of Everett Memorial Stadium in the early going. Nick Goodwin opened the scoring by launching a solo home run to right-field off AquaSox starter Ty Cummings just two batters into the game.

Jeff Wehler then went deep for a solo shot to center field off Cummings to start the top of the second.

A pair of errors by Vancouver proved costly in the bottom of the second inning. A throwing miscue by Wehler at third base allowed Jared Sundstrom to reach base and an errant pickoff throw by C’s starter Lazaro Estrada gave Sundstorm another 90 feet. Estrada struck out Bill Knight and Caleb Cali but Andrew Miller flared a two-out single to center to drive in Sundstrom. Walks to Gabriel Moncada and Brock Rodden loaded the bases before Estrada balked Miller home with the tying run. Victor Labrada jumped on Estrada’s 30th pitch of the inning by hitting a two-run double to put the Frogs ahead. That was it for Estrada as he was relieved by Carson Pierce.

Everett would add two more runs against Grayson Thurman in the fifth. R.J. Schreck drew a leadoff walk and one out later, the bases were loaded when Knight walked and Cali reached on an infield single to short. A wild pitch scored Schreck and a Miller sacrifice fly to center brought in Knight.

C's Notes

The C’s could not get much going after their early power display. Dylan Rock drew a one-out walk in the second but Cummings got Jean Arnaez to hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Peyton Williams had a one-out free pass in the fourth but Cummings got another 6-4-3 DP from Wehler to end the frame. Cummings would retire the side in order in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Glenn Santiago worked a leadoff walk in the eighth against Shaddon Peavyhouse and that was also wiped out on an inning-ending 4-6-3 twin-killing by Arnaez.

In between, Holden Laws and Juan Burgos finished things up for the Frogs with perfect frames.

Estrada’s only misstep in the first inning was an infield single to third by Labrada. The four runs he allowed in the second were all unearned.

Pierce soaked up 2-1/3 innings without allowing a run and stranded a runner to end the second. He overcame a Knight hit-by-pitch with two outs in the third and got around a one-out walk to Moncada and a Brock Rodden single to right after striking out Miller.

Johnathan Lavallee stranded a runner for Thurman to finish the fifth and stranded a Labrada single to center and his two stolen bases at third by getting the next two hitters, including a strikeout of Josh Hood.

Conor Larkin found his way out of the seventh by striking out the side to leave a Knight pne-out walk and stolen base at second.

Lefthander Naswell Paulino also left a runner at second when Rodden singled to right and stole second with one out in the eighth.

Williams made his return to the C’s lineup after a rehab stint with the Dunedin Blue Jays. It was in Everett that Williams was last seen in a C’s uniform as he suffered a wrist injury chasing down a foul ball on the first base side in Game 2 of the Northwest League Championship Series.

Pat Gallagher gets the starting assignment on Wednesday for Vancouver as they take on the Everett AquaSox. Game time is 7:05 p.m. from Funko Field. The game is available on CanadiansBaseball.com and MiLB.TV.

Connor O’Halloran and Chris McElvain are listed as the probable starters for Thursday and Friday. Going by the last turn through the rotation, Ryan Jennings and Rafael Sánchez would be in line to get the starts on Saturday and Sunday for Brent Lavallee‘s ball club.

Congratulations to 2023-2024 C’s infielder Ryan McCarty for picking up his first two extra-base hits in his first Double-A game with a home run and a double in New Hampshire’s 10-5 win at Erie on Tuesday.

Congratulations to 2022-2023 righthander Michael Dominguez who won Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honours after hurling six shutout innings without allowing a hit in Akron on May 30. The Tampa, Florida native won Northwest League Pitcher of the Week honours with the Canadians in September of 2022.
