The Vancouver Canadians dropped an 8-6 decision to the Spokane Indians at Nat Bailey Stadium on Saturday.

Spokane set the tone in this one just two pitches in as Cole Carrigg cleared the right field fence with a leadoff home run off C’s starter Rafael Sánchez. Dyan Jorge got aboard on a fielding error by Jeff Wehler at third and Kyle Karros doubled to center to drive in Jorge. A Jake Snider fly out to center sent Karros to third and he would score on a  Juan Guerrero base hit up the middle to put Spokane ahead by three.

The C’s got their first run in the bottom of the second when Wehler doubled to right and advanced to third on a throwing error by Jesus Bugarin.  With one out, Spokane starter Michael Prosecky balked to send Wehler home. Dasan Brown was hit in the back with a pitch with two away and stole second base but did not get any further.

Vancouver got another run in the third with a two-out rally. Nick Goodwin was hit by a pitch and Dylan Rock walked to force Prosecky’s exit from the game. With Braxton Hyde on the mound, Wehler reached on an infield single to second on a hard smash that Jean Perez was able to knock down to load the bases. Jean Arnaez’s infield single to short scored Goodwin but Rock was cut down at the plate on a 6-5-2 play at the plate. Jorge ranged well to his right to prevent the ball from going to left field. Jorge threw the ball to third to Karos and he relayed the throw to the plate. It appeared Rock beat the tag with a headfirst slide but home plate umpire Jamal Allen disagreed.

Spokane would score again with a two-out uprising in the fifth against Sánchez who had retired 10 hitters in a row. Carrigg snapped that streak by tripling to left-center field and Jorge drove him home with an infield single to short to make it a 4-2 game.

Vancouver matched that run with one of their own in the bottom of the fifth.  Peyton Williams got a leadoff walk from Hyde, Jackson Hornung singled to right and Rock walked with one out to load the bases. An Arnaez two-out infield single to short that Jorge showed off his range again scored Williams. Jorge nearly got the force out but Perez could not hang on to the ball at second.

Spokane took advantage of some sloppy defence and put together another two-out rally in the sixth. A Wehler throwing miscue at third allowed José Cordova to get on base. Cordova stole second and third, the latter coming on ball four to Jesus Ordoñez. Aaron Munson replaced Sánchez on the hill and uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Cordova to get home on a close play at the plate as Jommer Hernández tossed the ball to Munson covering the plate. It was another close play that went Spokane’s way to give them a two-run lead.

In the top of the seventh, Spokane got another two-out run against Munson. Bugarin led off with a single to left and was bunted over to second by Jean Perez on a 1-3 play. Munson struck out Carrigg but Jorge singled to right to score Bugarin to give Spokane a 6-3 lead.

The Canadians stormed back in the eighth against Luis Amoroso. Arnaez singled to left and moved to second on a balk. Hernández walked and was replaced by Je’Von Ward at first base. Felix Ramires was brought in to face Jace Bohrofen for a lefty-lefty matchup and Bohrofen tripled down the line in right field to score Arnaez and Ward. A Williams chopper to second scored Bohrofen to tie the game at 6-6.

Spokane would snap the tie in the top of the ninth against Chay Yeager. One-out singles to right and center by Carrigg and Jorge set the stage. Yeager tried to pick off Carrigg at second but his throw went to center field. The Canadians botched a rundown that resulted in Jorge scrambling back to first and Carrigg scoring the go-ahead run. Karros singled to right to get Jorge to third and a Yeager wild pitch allowed Jorge to score the insurance run.

The C’s tried to get something going with two outs against when Arnaez capped off a four-hit night with a single to left. Pinch-runner Marcos De La Rosa took second on defensive indifference before Robert Brooks—who replaced Hernández behind the plate a half-inning earlier—drew a walk. The game ended when Bugarin ran down a fly ball in foul territory on the right field side.

C's Notes

Bohrofen was the first Vancouver hitter to reach base with a one-out walk in the bottom of the first. Bohrofen got to second on an Ordoñez passed ball before Williams singled to right and Hornung walked to load the bases but the C’s could not break through against Prosecky.

Brown had a base hit to right with one out in the second but Bugarin threw him out on a 9-6 play to put a damper on things in the fourth.

Goodwin walked with one out against Davison Palermo in the seventh and got to second on a wild pitch with two outs but he would remain 180 feet away from home plate.

Rafael Ohashi had the only scoreless outing for the C’s on the night. He walked Guerrero before getting Cordova to hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Arnaez made a diving stop on the ball before flipping the ball to Goodwin to start the twin-killing. Ohashi plunked Ordoñez in the left forearm on a 3-2 pitch and the Spokane catcher glared at Ohashi before taking his base.

Goodwin turned in a highlight reel play to end the ninth as he ranged to his right at short before unleasing a strong throw to get Guerrero at first.

The series finale between Vancouver and Spokane is set for 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. Carson Pierce will be the scheduled starter for the C’s. The game is on CanadiansBaseball.com and MiLB.TV with Tyler Zickel on the call.
