The Vancouver Canadians dumped the Spokane Indians 9-4 at Avista Stadium on Sunday.

Spokane jumped on Vancouver starter Pat Gallagher in the first inning. It started with a Cole Carrigg leadoff single to center, a steal of second, an advance to third on a Dyan Jorge groundout to short and an infield single to second by Charlie Condon to score Carrigg. A double to center by Kyle Karros scored Condon and Karros would come home on a Bryant Betancourt base hit to right. José Cordova drew a walk and he and Betancourt executed a double steal. A Jesus Bugarin 6-4 fielder’s choice brought in Betancourt to make it 4-0 Spokane. Alex Amalfi took over for Gallagher and got out of the inning thanks to the defence. The team donning the yellow Cafeticos jerseys tried to steal another run when Bugarin took off for second to draw a throw from C’s catcher Alex Stone. The throw was snared by a leaping Adrian Pinto in front of second base and he fired a strike to Stone to nab Cordova at the plate to end the inning.

The C’s began their comeback in the top of the second against rehabbing Colorado Rockies hurler Antonio Senzatela when Jackson Hornung hit a solo home run to right-center field with one out.

It was with one out in the third that Vancouver’s biggest rally took place. A Pinto walk knocked Senzatela out of the game and in came Alberto Pacheco. Just two pitches in, Jace Bohrofen singled to center to get Pinto over to third. Peyton Williams hustled down the line to beat out the throw to first on a 5-4 fielder’s choice to score Pinto. A Cutter Coffey walk and a Je’Von Ward single to center field got Williams home and a wild pitch by Pacheco allowed Coffey to race home with the tying run. After Hornung drew a walk, Stone got a single to center that EJ Andrews Jr. could not hold onto after trying to make a sliding catch. That allowed Ward and Hornung to cross the dish and give Vancouver a 6-4 lead.

The Canadians would score again in the eighth against Carlos Torres. Ward drew a one-out walk before Hornung popped one up in foul territory to the third base side of home plate. Cole Messina had a bead on it but did not toss aside his catching mask and he wound up dropping the ball. Hornung would take advantage when he doubled to the left field wall to score Ward. That was followed by another double down the left field by Stone to score Hornung with the C’s eighth run.

The Canadians capped off the scoring when Pinto doubled to left and ran home on a Bohrofen base hit to center off Welinton Herrera.

C's Notes

Amalfi got more help from Stone and Pinto in the bottom of the second inning when Stone caught Cole Carrigg stealing second after a walk. That was followed by an inning-ending strikeout of Jorge. The bottom of the third also ended with a strikeout as Amalfi struck out Betancourt to cap off a 1-2-3 inning. Only three Spokane hitters made it to the plate against Amalfi in the fourth when a Cordova infield single to third was wiped out on a 1-4-3 double play.

Irv Carter entered the game for Vancouver in the sixth and he struck out Carrigg and Jorge to end a perfect frame. Condon worked a leadoff walk in the seventh against Geison Urbaez but that was it for Spokane as Urbaez struck out Cordova to send the game into the eighth.

Grayson Thurman took over at that point and sat down all three hitters he faced. Kai Peterson struck out Betancourt and Cordova before getting Messina to fly out to center to clinch the series for Monty’s Mounties.

The C’s made a bit of headway against Senzatela in the first with a two-out rally when Bohrofen walked and Williams singled to center.

Williams walked to lead off the fifth and Ward walked with one out but nothing came out of that.

The Canadians are back home on Tuesday for a 7:05 p.m. start as they open a series against the Everett AquaSox. Ryan Watson is scheduled to throw that first pitch. The game is on CanadiansBaseball.com and MiLB.TV.
