C-Notes

Tuesday
Quebec City, Quebec native Nic Deschamps made his 2025 season debut behind the plate and picked up a base hit.
Eddie Micheletti made a nice leaping catch to take a hit away from Josh Caron in the second inning.
Carter Cunningham snared a liner off the bat of Luis Suisbel to start the sixth.
AquaSox second baseman Michael Arroyo was robbed of a home run to lead off the eighth but his drive down the left field line was called foul by home plate umpire Kaden Tichenor. To say Arroyo was displeased with the call would be a massive understatement. He would eventually strike out swinging against Nate Garkow. An informal poll of the press box populace was a resounding yes to the query, ‘Was that a fair ball?’
Aaron Parker debuted at Nat Bailey Stadium without his beard.
Jackson Hornung debuted a new walkup song in the best way possible by hitting a home run in his first at-bat. He is going with “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence.
Wednesday
Fernando Perez received an early gift when Everett leadoff hitter Jonny Farmelo was called for a pitch-clock violation, resulting in strike three to start the game. Perez got another gift when AquaSox catcher Freuddy Batista was also called for a pitch-clock violation before even throwing a pitch. Batista then softly lined out to first two pitches later.
The series featured three Perezs with Fernando for Vancouver and Marcelo Perez (opposing Fernando on the mound as a starter) and first baseman Milkar Perez for Everett.
There are also two Batistas with Edinson Batista for the Canadians and Freuddy Batista for the AquaSox.
Gabby Martinez received a rude welcome back to the Northwest League by getting hit by the first pitch he saw from Marcelo Perez. C’s fans may recall Martinez’s last game at Nat Bailey Stadium was against Everett in Game 4 of the Northwest League Championship Series in 2023. Martinez grounded out in his only at-bat against Marcelo Perez, who also started that night, but G-Mart would go 3-for-5 with two RBI to help the C’s win the title.
Martinez would have a perfect night at the plate by adding two walks, a single and a run scored. If that wasn’t enough, he contributed with the leather by making his first start in center field since 2021. Martinez flagged down a drive from Lazaro Montes in deep center field and managed to throw out Michael Arroyo at second after he tagged up from first base for an inning-ending 8-4 double play. In the eighth inning, Martinez stole another hit from Montes with a leaping grab near the manual scoreboard.
Arjun Nimmala was able to climb the latter and take away a hit from Tai Peete at short in the seventh inning.
Yondrei Rojas made his Nat Bailey Stadium debut in the eighth and struck out two batters to strand a pair of hits in the eighth.
Jackson Hornung was able to scramble to first base and recorded the out by sliding into the bag to retire Carson Jones to end the game.
Thursday
Nick Goodwin did a good job to stay on the second base bag after an off-target throw from shorstop Arjun Nimmala to force out Lazaro Montes after a Josh Caron ground ball with in the second inning. Nimmala would handle the next ground ball off the bat of Tai Peete to start a 6-3 inning-ending double play.
The umpiring crew of Kaden Tichenor and Theo Arndt called for a check of the ballcap of AquaSox lefty Nico Tellache not too long after appearing the game in the fourth inning. No idea of what prompted the umps to do this and Everett manager Zach Vincej wanted to know what was up. Tellache stayed in the game and gave up two runs in 3-2/3 innings of relief.
Nimmala and Carter Cunningham teamed up for a 6-3 putout that saw Nimmala range to his left before Cunningham made a nice scoop at first to just get Josh Caron on a close play to end the fifth inning.
The truism of “baseball is a game of inches” was never more true than in the top of the sixth. A two-out rally by the AquaSox started with singles past a diving Goodwin by Charlie Pagliarini and Anthony Donofrio. Then a triple past a diving Cunningham down the right field line by Colt Emerson completed the unfortunate hat trick. Official scorer Mike Hanafin called Emerson’s three-bagger the shortest triple he had ever seen as the ball died in the grass just fair down the right field line. The two-run triple proved to be the difference in a one-run loss for the C’s.
Cunningham was able to pull down a high throw from Cutter Coffey to retire Peete for the second out of the seventh inning.
Vancouver’s best chances to tie the game were in the seventh when Nic Deschamps led off with a single to left field over the head of third baseman Luis Suisbel. Nimmala also singled to left but an Eddie Micheletti 6-4-3 double play in between killed that rally.
The ninth looked very promising when Cunningham walked and Stefan Raeth hit Goodwin on the forearm. Deschamps then laid down a bunt which Raeth handled to complete the 1-3 putout at first. A Micheletti ground ball that was ticketed to left field was knocked down by AquaSox shortstop Colt Emerson. Cunningham scored on the play but Emerson chased down the ball and threw out Goodwin at third base who went too far past the bag before trying to scramble back.
Friday
Carter Cunningham made a nice scoop on ta ground ball by Colt Emerson before tossing the ball to pitcher Jackson Wentworth for the second out of the third inning. Unfortunately, Wentworth gave up a Michael Arroyo wall-banging double to center field and a Lazaro Montes RBI single on consecutive pitches.
In the fourth inning, Cunningham cut down a runner at home plate after fielding a ground ball from Jonny Farmelo. Aaron Parker was able to put the tag down on Anthony Donofrio at the dish to limit the Everett uprising to one run.
Cutter Coffey made a nice diving stab at third base on a Farmelo line drive to end the fifth.
Saturday
Rainout ruins Hazel Mae and Women in Sports Day, but the Sportsnet broadcaster aims to be back at The Nat later this season.
Sunday
Juaron Watts-Brown put forward an effort worthy of a Northwest League Pitcher of the Week award in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Unfortunately, Everett switch-pitcher and 2024 Seattle Mariners first-round pick Jurrangelo Cijntje was better and he wound up with the weekly plaudits.

JWB struck out the side in the first inning and whiffed two more Frogs in the second. Cijntje looked like he was going to wobble when he plunked Cutter Coffey and Eddie Micheletti in the bottom of the second, the first plunking as a lefthander. However, Cijntje went back with his right hand to retire the next three hitters in a row, fanning Jackson Hornung and Carter Cunningham.
The Frogs would get to Watts-Brown for their only run in the third when a Carson Jones one-out walk was cashed in by a Michael Arroyo double to right-center field.
Nick Goodwin had a leadoff walk and went to second on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third and Cunningham opened the home half of the fifth with a free pass but they were both stranded by Cijntje. Goodwin was robbed of a hit on a diving catch by Jones in left field in the fifth.
Sean Keys was the first and only Canadians hitter to solve Cijnjte with a one-out base hit up the middle in the sixth but Keys was forced out at second on the front end of a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Coffey.
JJ Sánchez kept it a one-run ball game by striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth to strand runners at second and third and Aaron Munson struck out one in a perfect seventh.
Micheletti singled to right field off Elijah Dale past a diving Brandon Eike at first base to start the bottom of the seventh. Colt Emerson then booted what should have been a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play, allowing Hornung to reach base. However, Emerson redeemed himself by starting. 6-4-3 twin-killing with Cunningham unable to beat the relay on a close play at first. Pinch-runner Je’Von Ward advanced to third on the play and Gabby Martinez walked but Goodwin struck out to end the game.
Game 2 saw the C’s score first in the bottom of the second when Gabby Martinez doubled to left and scored on a Je’Von Ward triple to right off Evan Pruitt. Unfortunately, Ward was thrown out at the plate when Colt Emerson threw him out from short on a ground ball by Nic Deschamps. Emerson then stole a hit from Aaron Parker with a diving catch to end the second inning.
Arjun Nimmala doubled to left to begin the bottom of the third inning, but only Eddie Micheletti joined him on base with a two-out walk. Jackson Hornung grounded out to third and was thrown out at first on a bang-bang play to end the inning.
Gabby Martinez hit a ground-rule double to left field to start the fourth inning but was left stranded.
Cutter Coffey made a nice pick at second base on a hot smash by Freuddy Batista to finish the top of the five. It almost seemed like Coffey was trying to defend himself from the ball.
C-Changes

Infielder Adrian Pinto is on the seven-day list with a start date of May 16.
2024 C’s righthander Chris McElvain was assigned to Low-A Dunedin for a rehab stint on May 14.
Outfielder Victor Arias has been activated from the injured list after being under the weather. He has not played since May 7 at Spokane. Pitcher Irv Carter has been activated from the Development List with his last appearance on the bump taking place against Hillsboro on May 2.
Carter and Arias were squaring off in a simulated game at Nat Bailey Stadium prior to Sunday’s doubleheader. Catcher Hayden Gilliland was behind the plate and served as home plate umpire by calling balls and strikes.
Righthanders Juaron Watts-Brown, Grant Rogers, Nate Garkow and Kevin Miranda have been promoted to Double-A New Hampshire. Watts-Brown punched out 62 batters this season, 12 ahead of the next pitcher in the Northwest League, and posted a 3.62 earned run average. Rogers went 3-1 and led the NWL with a 1.82 ERA and Garkow struck out nearly two batters an inning with 32 whiffs in 16-2/3 innings. Miranda was with the C’s in 2023 and 2024 and won three games with a hold this season with Vancouver, earning seven career W’s during his time with Monty’s Mounties.
Taking their place are fellow righties Trey Yesavage, Khal Stephen and Gage Stanifer who have been called up from Low-A Dunedin. Yesavage joins his fellow East Carolina Pirates teammate Carter Cunningham with the C’s. The Blue Jays first-round pick in 2024 went 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA, struck out 55 batters in 33-1/3 innings and had a WHIP (walks+hits divided by innings pitched) of 0.81. He also limited Florida State League hitters to a .162 batting average.
Stephen was the Jays second-rounder in 2024 from Mississippi State and also went 3-0 with a 2.06 ERA. He punched out 48 batters and walked only seven in 39-1/3 innings. He also converted his lone save opportunity and had a WHIP of 0.82.
Stanifer was Toronto’s 19th round pick from Westfield High School in Indiana. He won all four of his decisions, went 2-for-2 in save opportunities with a microscopic ERA of 0.69, a WHIP of 0.81 and rung up 38 batters in 26 innings out of the D-Jays bullpen.
Yesavage is listed as the probable starter at Eugene on Tuesday and Sunday. In between, it is projected to be Fernando Perez, Stephen, Jackson Wentworth and TBA. Tuesday to Friday game times are 6:35 p.m. Saturday’s game is a 5:05 p.m. start and the Sunday finale at P.K. Park is set for 4:05 p.m. All games are on CanadiansBaseball.com with Tyler Zickel.
