C-Notes

C's Notes

Congratulations to C’s infielder Nick Goodwin for winning the Northwest League Player of the Week award for June 2-8. The former Kansas State Wildcat batted .429 with five home runs and 12 runs batted in over the six-game series at Tri-City. He joins Arjun Nimmala, Victor Arias and Adrian Pinto in the NWL Player of the Week club for 2025.

Two other former C’s gained POW awards. 2019 and 2021 outfielder Will Robertson won International League honours by batting .364 with five home runs and eight RBI. Three of those homers came at Syracuse on June 3.

2023-2024 righthander Rafael Sánchez was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week thanks to a seven-inning no-hitter for New Hampshire against Altoona on June 7. Only three runners reached against Sánchez as he walked two and plunked one.

Tuesday

The C’s had just one hit with runners in scoring position, but it was a big one as Nick Goodwin delivered a three-run home run, his second of the game, to erase a one-run deficit and turn it into a two-run win.

2021-2023 Vancouver Canadians righthander Sam Ryan pitched 1-2/3 scoreless innings for Tri-City, earning his fifth hold of the season.

Wednesday

The C’s could not make it all the way back as they managed just one hit in the final three innings, a one-out infield single to the mound in the ninth by Victor Arias, who had homered on the second pitch of the game to left field against Keythel Keys.

Thursday

Outfielder Je’Von Ward was on base five times with an RBI single, four walks and a stolen base. Catcher Hayden Gilliland returned to the team after a brief two-game stint at Double-A New Hampshire in which he had a double in five at-bats. He contributed a single and a sacrifice fly.

Friday

Half of the C’s 10 hits were of the extra-base variety with three homers and two triples. Nick Goodwin singled off former Angels pitcher Ryan Johnson to drive in two runs and Vancouver never looked back. Johnson was the Halos second-round compensatory pick in 2024 out of Dallas Baptist and began the year in the majors. The righthander’s last two outings were against the Blue Jays in Anaheim, and he gave up a combined four runs while recording just two outs, taking the loss on May 8. Johnson was sent down to Tri-City on May 9.

Vancouver Canadians Trey Yesavage

Trey Yesavage in his only appearance at Nat Bailey Stadium on May 31.

Continuing with the 2024 MLB Draft, enjoy the highlights below of Trey Yesavage because that is the last time he will suit up for Monty’s Mounties. The Blue Jays 2024 first-rounder has been promoted to Double-A New Hampshire.

The promotion is well deserved, but it is bitterly disappointing not to get to see Yesavage again at Nat Bailey Stadium, especially with the C’s big series against Spokane looming. Once again, this is another example of Blue Jays baseball operations making a baffling decision. There is no question that Yesavage is clearly ready for Double-A, but there was no downside to having him pitch in what would be a playoff-type atmosphere at the Nat against Spokane. New Hampshire is well out of the first-half playoff picture in the Eastern League, and this promotion could have waited a week.

Saturday

Nick Goodwin and Eddie Micheletti hit back-to-back homers for the second consecutive
game and Goodwin went back-to-back with Jay Harry on April 6, also in Tri-City.

Righthander Chris McElvain was back in a C’s uniform nearly a year after his last appearance at Tri-City on June 21. The former Cincinnati Reds farmhand had been on rehab assignment from a UCL tear in his right elbow with the Florida Complex League and Dunedin Blue Jays since early May.

Sunday

It was shaping up to be a frustrating day for the C’s when they were trailing 5-3 heading into the top of the seventh. Leadoff walks in the first and second innings eventually led to three Tri-City runs and another one in the sixth resulted in two more runs, with Randy De Jesús and Anthony Schull doing the damage with two-run homers.

Eddie Micheletti drew a leadoff walk in the fifth but that did not go anywhere but the seventh inning was a different story. Carter Cunningham—who led off the third with a home run against Austin Gordon—and Hayden Gilliland drew back-to-back walks off Jake Smith. They would come around to score on an Arjun Nimmala double and a Jackson Hornung bases-loaded walk. Je’Von Ward drew a bases-drunk base on balls to bring in the go-ahead run against Carlos Espinosa before Nick Goodwin unloaded for a grand slam.

The Canadians have drawn 331 walks in 57 games to lead not just the Northwest League but all of minor league baseball. They are two ahead of the Low-A Carolina Mudcats of the Carolina League, a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate.

Looking Ahead

Khal Stephen, who has not been promoted to Double-A yet, gets the series-opening start for now for Vancouver against Spokane on Tuesday. No other starters have been announced yet for the C’s. Tuesday to Thursday start times at Nat Bailey Stadium are 7:05 p.m., and Friday to Sunday first pitches are at 1:05 p.m. All games are on CanadiansBaseball.com with Tyler Zickel and Chris Georges calling the action.

C-Changes
