The Vancouver Canadians downed the Everett AquaSox 8-3 at Funko Field on Sunday.

The Canadians scored first in the first inning against AquaSox starter Ty Cummings. A two-out double to the right-field corner by Jace Bohrofen came around to score on a Freuddy Batista passed ball and a Cummings wild pitch.

Everett would tie it in the bottom of the first against Vancouver starter Rafael Sánchez. A one-out single to center field and a steal of second base by Josh Hood led to an RBI single to left by Jared Sundstrom.

The C’s got to Cummings again in the second inning. Jamari Baylor singled to center and went to third on a one-out single by Jommer Hernández that clanged off the right field fence. Up stepped Estiven Machado and he cleared that right field fence for a three-run home run into the berm to put Vancouver ahead 4-1.

The Frogs cut into the C’s lead with a two-out rally in the fifth against Sánchez. R.J. Schreck drew a walk and made it to third on a Sundstrom double to left. A wild pitch brought home Schreck and an infield single to third by Caleb Cali scored Sundstrom. Batista singled to center to chase Sánchez from the game. Grayson Thurman put out the fire by striking out Gabriel Moncada to keep the C’s in front by a run.

Baylor gave Vancouver a bit more breathing room by hammering a solo homer to left with two outs in the sixth against Tyler Cleveland.

The Canadians also got to Frogs reliever Anthony Tomczak in the seventh with a pair of singles to center by Hernández and Machado to put runners on the corners. Dasan Brown was hit by a pitch in the ribs and it looked like it was a bases-loaded situation. However, Tomczak was called for a balk and that allowed Hernández to score the Canadians seventh run. Brown was shaken up but was able to continue. Bohrofen would single to right with two outs to complete the two-run rally.

The C’s capped off the scoring when Hernández deposited the first pitch he saw from Stefan Raith for a solo homer to start the top of the ninth.

C's Notes

Rafael Sánchez was one out shy of picking up the victory after piling up 10 strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings. He struck out Victor Labrada to begin the game and stranded Sundstrom’s RBI single and stolen base at second base by fanning Cali.

A Batista single to left to start the second only got as far in the second. The biggest jam for Sánchez was a one-out bases-loaded jam in the third when Josh Hood singled to short, Schreck walked and Sundstrom was hit by a pitch. Sánchez would strike out the side with Labrada and Batista going down swinging and Cali caught looking in between.

Things were looking promising for Rafael Sánchez when he struck out the side again in the fourth by getting Moncada looking and Axel Sánchez and Colin Davis swinging. In the fifth, Rafael Sánchez fanned Labrada again and erased a single to center by Hood by picking him off.

The victory went to Grayson Thurman who recorded four outs with an assist from Brown who threw out Labrada trying to go for a double on an 8-4 play to end the sixth.

Jonathan Lavallee struck out Schreck after issuing a leadoff walk to Hood in the seventh and struck out Moncada in the midst of a second straight scoreless frame in the eighth.

Rafael Ohashi plunked Labrada and walked Hood with one out in the ninth but eventually ended the game by getting Sundstrom to ground out to short.

Glenn Santiago entered the game in center field for Vancouver to replace Brown in the bottom of the eighth which may have had to do with Brown getting hit by a pitch in the seventh.

Vancouver’s offence was kept in check by Cummings as he allowed just a Jackson Hornung single to short in the third and made it through five innings. Jimmy Kingsbury kept the C’s off the board with a perfect eighth.

The Canadians begin a seven-game homestand against Spokane at Nat Bailey Stadium on Tuesday night. Tyler Zickel and Chris Georges will have the play-by-play on CanadiansBaseball.com and MiLB.TV. Tuesday’s game is also the annual Dog Day of Summer as fans are invited to bring their pooch. Waivers are available at right here on CanadiansBaseball.com and at the ballpark.
