Vancouver Canadians Griffin Conine

Griffin Conine slugged two home runs to lead the C’s to victory in Everett Friday.

The Vancouver Canadians came up with their biggest series victory to date. The C’s hammered the Everett AquaSox with five home runs on the way to a 9-0 whitewashing at Everett Memorial Stadium Friday. The win moves the C’s to within two games of the North Division lead.

Bryan Lizardo belted his second home run of the season in Everett Friday.

C's RecapRehabbing major leaguer Rob Whalen got the start for the AquaSox after dealing with shoulder inflammation. The one-time Atlanta Brave needed just five pitches to get out of the first inning but the second inning was a different story. Griffin Conine connected for a home run to right-center field to lead off the inning and that was followed one out later by another solo shot by Bryan Lizardo to center. Whalen struck out two to conclude his two-inning stint.

Vancouver Canadians Tanner Kirwer

Tanner Kirwer joined the long ball parade in Everett Friday with his second home run of the series.

The C’s would go to the long ball again in the top of the fifth against AquaSox lefty Max Roberts, the originally scheduled starter in this one. Tanner Kirwer launched one over the center field wall to start the inning to make it 3-0 Vancouver. Otto Lopez doubled to right and Hunter Steinmetz was credited with a double after flaring one to center. Lopez would score on a Yorman Rodriguez grounder to short. Sterling Guzman extended the inning with a walk before Lizardo doubled to left to score Steinmetz with the fifth Vancouver run.

Sterling Guzman swatted his first Northwest League home run in Everett Friday.

The C’s offence erupted again in the eighth with a two-out rally that began with a Steinmetz walk and stolen base as Steinmetz beat out a pickoff throw from Everett reliever Ulises Perez. Steinmetz would come around to score on a Rodriguez single. Rodriguez went to second after his single and moved up to third on a wild pitch. He could have stayed at first as Conine homered again to right field to make it 8-0 Canadians. Guzman made it back-to-back jacks as he cleared the wall in center. Lizardo almost made it back-to-back-to-back jacks as he was a couple of feet short of a home run out to center. Joey Gerber was summoned from the AquaSox bullpen to end the inning.

Vancouver Canadians Josh Winckowski

Josh Winckowski lowered his earned run average to 3.43 in winning his second straight start.

Josh Winckowski got the victory in this one with five shutout innings. He struck out Josh Stowers to begin the game but Ryan Ramiz and Connor Kopach singled before Matt Sanders walked to load the bases with two outs. Winckowski left them loaded when Troy Dixon grounded out to second.

Winckowski settled in during the second inning by striking out Ryne Ogren and Cash Gladfelter swinging and Charlie McConnell in a perfect inning.

The third through five innings saw Winckowski strand a runner in scoring position. Ramiz singled and went to second on a wild pitch but was stranded in the third. A Sanders leadoff double went for naught in the fourth. A Ramiz single that saw him go to second on an error by Conine in right was also wasted by Everett in the fifth. Winckowski scattered four hits and two walks while striking out seven to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Mitch McKown gave up two hits and struck out one over two innings and Justin Watts whiffed three over the last two frames to keep the shutout intact.

C-Notes

C's NotesEverett manager Jose Moreno was ejected for the second straight night. He took issue with home plate umpire Emma Charlesworth-Seiler‘s interpretation of the strike zone after Conine drew a walk off Roberts to load the bases with two outs in the third inning. After the argument, Roberts would whiff Guzman to keep the C’s from scoring. Moreno was tossed in the bottom of the eighth by home plate umpire Nolan Earley after Jansiel Rivera struck out.

According to broadcaster Rob Fai, the C’s were one home run shy of tying the club mark for most homers in the game.

Vancouver Canadians Hunter Steinmetz

Hunter Steinmetz had a good game on the basepaths by stealing his first three bases of the season.

Vancouver was a perfect 5-and-0 on the basepaths with Steinmetz stealing three and Lopez and Guzman swiping one apiece.

Though the C’s struck out 14 times in this one, their 15 hits and six walks more than made up for it. They had 11 extra-base hits and were 5-for-16 with runners in scoring position. The runaway victory afforded manager Dallas McPherson to make a couple of late-game substitutions. Brandon Polizzi replaced Kirwer in left field in the eighth inning and drew a walk in his lone at-bat in the ninth. Jesus Severino pinch-hit for Lopez but struck out in the ninth.

The C’s begin a weekend series tonight against another North Division rival in the Spokane Indians at Nat Bailey Stadium Saturday. Southpaw Elio Silva (1-1, 4.41) is scheduled to throw the first pitch at 7:05 pm. No starter has been listed for Spokane. The game can be heard on CanadiansBaseball.com.

The 23 year-old Dominican has been named to the World Team roster after hitting .273 with two home runs for the Toledo Mud Hens. Lugo was called up to Detroit earlier this season but did not appear in a game.
