The Vancouver Canadians were embarrassed by the Eugene Emeralds by a score of 9-1 at P.K. Park on Friday.

The first inning saw both teams get their leadoff man aboard in the first inning but not scoring. Dasan Brown opened the game with a single to left off Emerald starter Trevor McDonald and he stole second base with one out before being stranded.

Grant McCray singled to center off C’s starter Kevin Miranda and was bunted over to second by Carter Howell but Miranda would keep McCray there with an inning-ending strike out of Matt Higgins.

Both McDonald and Miranda traded perfect second innings with Miranda striking out Luis Toribio and Zach Morgan.

Dasan Brown singled to left with two outs in the third and stole his 24th base of the. year but the C’s could not bring him home.

The Emeralds broke through in the bottom of the third when McCray homered to right-center field with one away to score a leadoff plunk to Thomas Gavello. Higgins singled to center with two outs and came home on a Toribio double to right to put Eugene ahead 3-0.

After an uneventful fourth inning and top of the fifth, the Emeralds were back at it again in the bottom of the fifth. McCray walked, went to third on a Howell double to center and was balked home by Miranda. After Aeverson Arteaga lined out to Abiezel Ramirez at second, Miranda was relieved by Sam Ryan and he surrendered a Higgins sacrifice fly to center to score Howell with the Emeralds fifth run.

Tanner Kiest struck out the side in relief of McDonald in the top of the sixth before the Emeralds struck again in the bottom half. Carter Williams singled to left and made it home on a Gavello double to center. McCray then walked and Arteaga reached on a throwing error by Estiven Machado at short, allowing Gavello to score run number seven for Eugene.

The Canadians only run came in the top of the seventh. Cade Doughty singled to left, advanced to third on a Josh Kasevich single to right and scored on a Ryan McCarty sac fly to right. Gabby Martinez walked but he was the last baserunner of the inning and the penultimate baserunner for Vancouver in this one.

The Emeralds laid more misery on the C’s in the bottom of the eighth. Clearly not enough things went their way for the home side as Damon Dues used a Jedi mind trick to convince the umpiring crew of Robert Ginther and Nelson Fraley that a diving catch by Dasan Brown in center was not a catch and was awarded with a one-out single. Replays on MiLB.TV did not clearly indicate Brown trapped the ball in center against the Oregon Ducks Yellow O logo in the grass and if replay challenges were allowed, there was nothing conclusive to overturn the original out call. However, Dues got his single against Eric Pardinho, McCray walked, a wild pitch was thrown and Howell doubled to center to bring in Dues and McCray for runs eight and nine.

Other than a McCarty single to right with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Kiest was able to complete the four-inning save for Eugene.
