Ryan McCarty gives the safe signal after a two-run triple on Friday.
The Vancouver Canadians won Game 1 of its doubleheader 2-0 before the Hillsboro Hops bounced back to win Game 2 5-2 on Friday at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Vancouver extended its winning to three to start the day. The only runs of the game came in the bottom of the third inning against Hillsboro lefty Evan Short. Jeff Wehler reached base safely when he beat out a grounder to short. He stole second and was joined on the bases by Nick Goodwin who drew a walk. Ryan McCarty then sliced one deep to the right field corner that just landed fair and Wehler and Goodwin raced home to score on a triple.
Geison Urbaez blanked Hillsboro for the first four innings before lefty Naswell Paulino, Josh Mollerus and Justin Kelly finished things up. Paulino got the win, Mollerus earned a hold and Kelly picked up the save.

Dylan Rock (#27) and Jace Bohrofen (#8) get ready to greet Nick Goodwin (#1) who hit a two-run homer on Friday.
The second game started well for the Canadians but it sure didn’t end well. A one-out walk by Jace Bohrofen in the bottom of the inning third would score when Nick Goodwin took Hops starter Ricardo Yan deep to the left field porch for a two-run home run.
The Hops got a two-run homer of their own to tie things up against Ryan Jennings in the top of the fourth. Jennings broke Adrian Pintar‘s bat and produced a slow roller to short with one out. Estiven Machado made a barehanded attempt for the ball but could not grab it and was charged with an error. Gavin Conticello then cleared the wall in center field just underneath the video board for a game-tying blast.
Hillsboro would grab the lead in the fifth against Jennings. A one-out single to center by Juan Corniel and got into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two outs, Machado was called for defensive interference when Jennings made a pickoff throw to second. That placed Corniel at third and he would score the go-ahead run when Jennings committed a balk. Manny Peña kept the inning going with a walk before stealing second base on a close play. Peña scored on another Jennings wild pitch and a throwing error by Jommer Hernández.
The Hops added to their advantage with another one-out rally against Alex Amalfi. A Christian Cerda walk and stolen base came in to score on a Kevin Sim single to left.
C-Notes

Dasan Brown started the bottom of the first with a walk and Goodwin had a free pass with outs. The second inning saw Brennan Orf and Jackson Hornung open the second with base hits to left. Neither rally resulted in a run.
Bohrofen made a nice running catch toward the right field line to retire Pintar for the final out of a 1-2-3 inning.
Urbaez retired the first four hitters he faced and retired nine of the first 10 with only a Peña reaching base with a walk. Troy had the first Hillsboro hit with a single to left and stole second to start the top of the fourth inning. Pintar then drew a walk and David Martin flew out to center to move Troy to third. Urbaez then induced a sharply-turned 4-6-3 double play to turn Hillsboro away.
Paulino stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth. A Conticello swinging bunt up the third base side resulted in an infield single and C’s catcher Jackson Hornung was shaken up and trying to contort his body to pick up the ball before making the throw to first. Oyen, Alberta’s Gavin Logan struck out before a Paulino balk moved Conticello to second. The inning ended on a fly ball to center by Corniel.
Mollerus struck out Troy and Pintar to end a perfect sixth inning and Kelly overcame a David Martin base hit to right to start the seventh by striking out Conticello swinging to end the game.
Vancouver wasted some scoring opportunities in Game 2. A pair of two-out walks by Borohfren and Goodwin in the first and a couple of one-out free passes in the second by Machado and Kekai Rios with a Machado stolen base in between all went for naught.
A Jean Arnaez fielder’s choice led to Rios being forced out at second and was hurt on a feet-first slide. He had to be helped off the field and was replaced by Hernández at the plate. Machado advanced to third on the play but runners were left on the corners when McCarty fouled out to third.
McCarty led off the fifth with a base hit to right off Hops lefty Shane Telfer but was thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning. A Goodwin leadoff walk in the sixth against Telfer and a two-out double to right by McCarty with two outs in the ninth against Listher Sosa rounded out the final on-base activity for the day.
Jennings faced just one hitter over the minimum in the first three innings. He started a 1-6-3 double play off the bat of Tommy Troy to erase a Peña leadoff single to center and struck out Pintar swinging in the first. In the second, Jennings stranded a one-out Conticello single to right at second base after a balk.
The Canadians and Hops play again on Saturday afternoon. Rafael Sánchez will get the start for Monty’s Mounties. The game starts at 1:05 p.m. with Tyler Zickel and Chris Georges broadcasting the action on CanadiansBaseball and MiLB.TV.
Pat Gallagher is scheduled to start Sunday’s finale for the C’s.
