The Vancouver Canadians were unable to put together their first winning streak of the season as they lost 3-1 to the Hillsboro Hops Saturday. Vancouver falls to 3-6 on the season.
The Hops scored first in the fourth inning on a leadoff home run by Steven Leyton off William Gaston that stayed fair down the left field line.
Vancouver would tie it in the top of the fifth when Dominic Abbadessa led off with a triple to right field off Adrian Del Moral and managed to score on a sacrifice fly by Davis Schneider despite running into Hops catcher Ryan January before reaching home plate.
It looked like a good omen for the C’s to take the lead in the eighth when Schneider ended an 0-for-18 start to the year with a ground-rule double to center off Erin Baldwin. Tanner Morris followed up with a walk but Trevor Schwecke and Luis De Los Santos went down swinging. Trevor McKenna was brought out of the Hillsboro bullpen but he walked Will Robertson to load the bases. Ronny Brito worked the count to 3-2 before he struck out looking. Brito and manager Casey Candaele were both ejected by home plate umpire Andrew Clark.
The Hops would capitalize on their opportunity in the eighth when Ricky Martinez singled against Grayson Huffman and would steal second base. Leyton drew a walk before Andy Yerzy would rip one up the middle to score Martinez and advance Leyton to third. Luke Gillingham got a double play ball off the Jesus Marriaga but it cashed in Leyton with the insurance run.
The C’s did get the tying run to the plate in the ninth when McGregory Contreras reached on a throwing error at third by David Garza but Brett Wright hit into a fielder’s choice, Abbadessa flied out and Schneider struck out to end the game.
C-Notes

The C’s strung together two-out singles by De Los Santos and Robertson in the first inning but Brito struck out swinging. Contreras started the second inning with a double but he remained 180 feet away as Wright flied out to left while Abbadessa and Schneider struck out swinging. De Los Santos had a two-out single in the third but Del Moral turned the C’s away again. He lasted five innings and gave up just one run while striking out seven. Juan Garcia followed up with two perfect frames for the Hops.
Gaston had to work around three hits and four walks but only gave up a run over 5-2/3 innings and produced seven groundball outs. Huffman pitched 1-1/3 innings but could not get any of the three hitters he faced in the eighth to take the loss.
Vancouver was 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.
The C’s and Hops play Game 3 of their four-game set at Ron Tonkin Field today. Gabriel Ponce (0-0, 3.60) will face Deyni Olivero (1-0, 0.00) in a 4:05 pm start. The game can be heard on CanadiansBaseball.com and watched on MiLB.TV.
