The Vancouver Canadians and the Tri-City Dust Devils saw their game suspended due to rain at Nat Bailey Stadium Wednesday.

Michael Dominguez struck out Mike Peabody and Zach Neto swinging to begin the game and stranded a two-out double by Gabe Matthews with another punchout of Osmy Gregorio who looked at strike three.

The C’s had an early chance to score as they were gifted with a leadoff single up the first base side by Dasan Brown. The Oakville, Ontario native fouled the ball off his left foot but took off for first base and reached second on a throwing error by Dust Devils pitcher Zac Kristofak. Leo Jiménez struck out swinging. With Damiano Palmegiani at the plate, Brown stole third base and came home on a throwing error by catcher Kyle Lovelace but Brown was returned to second because home plate umpire Paul Roemer called batter’s interference on Palmegiani, a questionable call to say the least. Brown would steal later third but Palmegiani struck out looking. Riley Tirotta extended the inning with a walk but P.K. Morris struck out swinging.

In the second inning, Dominguez struck out Joe Stewart swinging before getting some help from Palmegiani at the hot corner who made a barehanded grab and threw out D’Shawn Knowles on a bunt attempt.

Christian Sepulveda flied out to right as Garrett Spain managed to find the ball in between the raindrops to end the inning.

Miguel Hiraldo began the bottom of the second by stinging the ball up the middle for a base hit but he made it no further as Jommer Hernandez struck out looking, Spain flied out to left field and Glenn Santiago struck out swinging.

After the grounds crew poured some fresh dirt on the mound and around the bases that led to a dealy, Dominguez snared a rocket off the bat of José Reyes on the mound for the first out of the third before allowing a Lovelace base knock to center field. Lovelace stole second base but Dominguez struck out Peabody swinging and Neto looking before the game was called.

C's Notes

A moment of silence was held for Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully prior to the start of Wednesday’s game. The Hall of Fame announcer passed away at age 94 Tuesday night. He will be honoured with a commemorate patch on the Dodgers uniforms.

The C’s will have two new additions to the roster. Righthander Eric Pardinho has been called up from Dunedin and will wear number 16. The 21 year-old from Lucelia, Brazil missed the entire 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery on his elbow. He made just one appearance on the mound in 2021 as he threw three shutout innings with four strikeouts for the Florida Complex League Blue Jays. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound hurler made his season debut in the FCL June 18 against the Tigers. After two appearances and one run allowed over three innings at the complex, Pardinho was bumped up to Dunedin and allowed just one run in 12 innings, winning all three of his decisions with a 0.75 earned run average. He also struck out 13 batters and walked two.

Shortstop Alex De Jesus—acquired in the trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers that saw pitcher Mitch White go to Toronto and C’s pitcher Nick Frasso and hurler Moises Brito go to L.A.—is slated to arrive in YVR. The 20 year-old from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic was rated the number 18 prospect in the Dodgers system by Baseball America. The right-handed hitting De Jesus slashed .282/.376/.421 with High-A Great Lakes with four home runs among 17 extra-base hits and 26 runs batted in. He started the year in Low-A Rancho Cucamonga and put together a line of .259/.398/.483 with seven homers among 17 XBH and 22 RBI. De Jesus was signed by the Dodgers as a free agent on July 3, 2018.

The Canadians and Dust Devils will complete the suspended game which begins at 5:05 p.m and that will be followed by a seven-inning contest. You can catch all the action on CanadiansBaseball.com and MiLB.TV.
